As the number of private
cars has increased, so too has the level of pollution in many cities. What can
be done to tackle this increasingly common problem?
There has been an alarming rise in the number of
cars owned by people, which is resulting in an increase in pollution in many
cities. This essay will discuss potential solutions to this rising problem.
In the past, cars were very expensive and not
everybody could afford to buy one. Even loans given by the banks were at high
interest rates, hence only the rich and elite had cars. But with the changes in
the banking system, the interest rates have fallen and loans are being granted
easily, resulting in an increase in the number of cars being purchased.
Moreover, the public transport is not well maintained by the government. Many a
times, buses and trains are very old, the seats are torn or broken. Sometimes,
they are very noisy due to lack of engine servicing. This has caused many
people to use their personal cars to go to work instead.
Having said that, the increase in the number of
cars being driven in cities has resulted in a significant rise in the pollution
levels. This will have detrimental effects on lives and the environment in the
near future. Therefore, measures need to be taken to curb the rise in
pollution. Firstly, increasing the rate of interest on vehicles could be a major
step in discouraging people from buying cars, as this would mean only a part of
the population will be able to afford taking a loan from banks. Secondly,
government should invest some of it’s revenue in the purchase of new buses and
trains. It can further encourage people to use public transport by dropping the
transport fares. Furthermore, increase in the price of fuels, could be a way of
deterring the use of personal cars.
To sum up, although there has been an increase in
the pollution levels in many cities due to the rise in the number of cars used,
it can be controlled if steps are taken in the right direction. Hence, I
strongly believe that if the banking system, public and the government work
together, the problem of pollution can be tackled successfully.
