Each year, the crime rate increases.
What are the causes of crime and what could be done to prevent this rise in criminal activities?
There has been a significant rise in the number of crimes happening around us. The government and the community together must implement strategies in order to keep them under control.
To begin with, there are many reasons for this sudden increase in the number of crimes. Firstly, poverty is the biggest motivating factor to commit an offence. Due to unemployment and inflation many people are unable to earn money and fulfill their basic necessities of living. Thus, the only way for these people to sustain their family is by robbery and thefts.
Secondly, children belonging to poor families do not have access to school education which results in unemployment and increases their inclination towards crimes. Furthermore, with the trend of making easy and quick money they get involved in crimes associated with drugs and human trafficking.
In order to curb the rise in crimes, government should make strict laws which will inhibit people from committing offences. Children belonging to poor families should be provided with free education through government schemes so that they are capable of earning bread and butter for their families in future. More jobs and vacancies should be created to ensure people are not unemployed. In addition, we as responsible citizens should be vigilant and report crimes occurring around us as well as prevent them from occurring.
To conclude, if the society and government work together, the problem of rise in crimes can be easily tackled and harmony can be established.

In some countries an increasing number of people are suffering from health problems as a result of eating too much fast food. It is therefore necessary for governments to impose a higher tax on this kind of food.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Research has proved that fast food is a major cause of health related problems in countries around the world. Some people think that this could be controlled if the government increases taxes on fast food.

To begin with, today’s generation has become career oriented. They are spend most of their day at work and hence don’t have time or energy to cook food at home. Hence, there has been a significant rise in the consumption of fast food. Secondly, fast food can be consumed on the go and this provides people to spend less time on eating and more on working. Furthermore, these food items are easily available and are cheaper than other healthy foods which makes them more popular.

Having said that, people should realize that the intake of fast food is having a negative impact on their well being. Since most of the fast food is deep fried, it increases the risk of acquiring cardio-vascular diseases. Fast food is a major contributing factor to obesity.
Increasing taxes on fast food would not be enough to deter individuals from its consumption. Since these foods are popular among working population, it would continue to be an easier alternative in order to save time. Hence, the government should encourage companies to conduct exercise and gym sessions in between working hours so that their employees benefit from it. Parents should cook healthy food at home and restrain their children from having unhealthy fast food. Schools should teach about the ill-effects of fast foods and benefits of sports and exercises. They should engage students in tasks that involve rigorous physical activities which will boost their stamina.

To conclude, I believe that heavy taxation on fast food is not a solution to the growing health issues resulting from fast food intake. Schools, families and companies also need to actively participate in promoting healthy eating and exercises.

Many childhood diseases can now be prevented through the use of vaccines.
Should parents be made by law to immunise their children against common diseases or should individuals have the right to choose not to immunise their children?
Vaccinations have been a medical breakthrough which has helped us to be immune against most diseases. While some think immunization should be compulsory by passing a law to support it, others are of the opinion that it should be a personal choice.

Opponents of immunization argue that vaccines are artificial ways of generating immunity against diseases. They believe that children should naturally acquire an antigen to which their bodies would produce antibodies and gain immunity against the disease. In addition, some vaccines provide immunity against diseases that are rare and their kids may not ever come in contact with such virus or bacteria. This would mean that some vaccines would be unneccessary. Furthermore, with vaccinations given at regular intervals, their children would fall sick until they develop the required amount of resistance against the antigen, which would only affect their child’s health negatively.

Proponents are of the view that, by passing a law every parent will be bound to immunize their children. This will help control the spread of the diseases especially among children going to childcare centers and schools. Vaccines will build their immunity and protect them from illnesses that otherwise could be easily acquired through contamination. Secondly, this would also mean that there would be less absentism from schools and extra-curricular activities. Moreover, working parents who are often unable to take leaves from their jobs to look after their sick children would also benefit.

To conclude, despite the advantages of immunization, I believe that vaccinating children is principally the decision of their parents. Parents whose children are vaccinated have nothing to fear as their children would not be severely affected while others will only be able to build their resistance to diseases.

Modern communications mean that it’s no longer necessary to write letters.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
With the recent technological breakthroughs, communication between people living worldwide has become possible, while writing letters has become outdated. I agree that its no longer necessary to write letters.

To begin with, the invention of telephones and mobile phones has made communication with people living in another part of the country or world possible. Today we are able to call our beloved ones from the comfort of our homes. While letters take days to reach, we can talk to a person the very moment we feel like.

Secondly, e-mails, fax and text messages has made business communications effective and faster. Hence, a lot of their time is saved unlike when letters were a source of communication. Furthermore, businesses are making huge profits by getting consumers from other states and countries. Due to video conference, companies can conduct meetings with clients or colleagues living in far countries. This has added to their proficiency.

Thirdly, in case of an emergency situation, telephones and cell phones are a boon as  ambulance or family members can be informed immediately. This has helped save many lives and rescue people from dire situations.

To sum up, modern communications have proved to be convenient and an efficient source of interaction rather than the time consuming letter writing.  Hence there is no doubt that letter writing has become less popular in the recent times.

Film stars and music celebrities may earn a great deal of money and live in luxurious surroundings, but many of them lead unhappy lives. Do you agree?
To what extent is this the price they pay for being famous?
Everyone desires to be famous and well known around the world. We envy the lives of the glamorous stars and wish we too, could enjoy the same lifestyle. But this comes with its own price.

Celebrities earn huge amount of money. They are able to afford luxurious accommodations, going to fancy restaurants, visit foreign countries and have all the comfortable amenities at their disposal. It won’t be wrong to say that they live a life similar to those belonging to royal families. Moreover, they are idols for the younger generations and get VIP treatment at every place they visit. They are praised and loved by all.

However, being famous has its own drawbacks. To begin with, film stars and music celebrities don’t enjoy the luxury of privacy. They are always flocked by fans and admirers wherever they go. Their private life is infringed upon. People always want to know about their role model’s day to day activities. Many a times these celebrities are stalked by their fans. Hence, although they have all the luxuries most of us can only think of, they lead a very unhappy life. They are not able to make real friends and are lonely. Due to their busy lives they are not able to spend quality time with their families. This solitude leads them to a state of depression. In addition, when they no longer are in public demand, they are often neglected by the crowd. This too creates a feeling of frustration and agony in them. Many of them are lured into drugs and alcohol to overcome their negative feelings.

To sum up, I believe that the life of celebrities is not as rosy as it appears. Although they have the best of all the materialistic things, they crave for a normal life. Hence, they pay a price that is much more than what they receive.

Buying things on the Internet, such as books, air tickets and groceries, is becoming more and more popular.
Do the advantages of shopping in this way outweigh the disadvantages?

There has been a significant rise in purchasing goods and services online. This essay will discuss the pros and cons to this trend.

To begin with, when shopping online, goods cannot be checked prior to buying. For example, while buying a dress, we have no means of knowing the quality of material used. Secondly, the color and material displayed in pictures online, may not always be true and many a times customers are disappointed with what they receive. Thirdly, the discounts lure clients to purchase items that are not required and increase their expenditure. In addition, local shops are the most hard hit by this developing technology as less people visit their shops. This is ruining the local economy.

Having said that, it can’t be denied that online shopping has its drawbacks.
Today people are very busy with work today. They don’t have enough time and energy to visit shops and buy things. Internet shopping has made it possible to order the items required at the click of a button, which are even delivered to their homes. In addition to the convenience, it has also made comparing prices of the same items sold under different brand names easier. Customers don’t need to visit different shops and get a quote for the goods they wish to purchase. Instead, they can compare it online and buy from sites that offer a good bargain. Furthermore, there are many discounts, promo codes and gift vouchers that are available on purchases of products online that make the deals lucrative for the customers. Most of the times, local shops run out of stock and there is a long waiting  list for some materials. Online shopping makes a wide variety of items available and delivered to customer’s homes within no time.

To conclude, if used judiciously, internet shopping is a boon and its advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

Many high-level positions in companies are filled by men even though the workforce in many developed countries is more than 50 per cent female. Companies should be required to allocate a certain percentage of these positions to women.

To what extent do you agree?

Women have always been considered the weaker sex for several centuries. This mind set is evident in all areas of life, especially at work.

As the world is progressing, more and more countries are becoming developed. Today, we see most countries preaching equality of men and women. But it doesn’t seem to be practiced in areas of work. Many top positions in companies are occupied by men. They are thought to be more capable and intelligent than women. Although both have the same educational degrees and skills, men are given preference over females for higher positions. For example, managers in most banks and IT companies are males. On the other hand, females are preferred for jobs like, personal assistants, receptionist or other lower positions. In addition, most restaurants too hire males for the head chef position, while females are hired for cleaning and waiting jobs.

In order for the progress of the country, everybody should be given equal opportunities, irrespective of gender. Since there is a gender bias, a probable solution would be reservation of certain posts for females. This would provide women who have the potential to grow and develop in their career but fall prey to gender bias, with a golden chance to prove their capability, which is often underestimated by the opposite sex. Moreover, it will establish a sense of equality at work places, which would ultimately reflect on the society. Since the companies would be able to make full utilization of the skills of both genders, it would be of great benefit for the company as well.

Hence, I agree that certain high level positions in companies should be allocated to women. This will provide them with new avenues to display their skills and potentials.

Some parents buy their children a large number of toys to play with.
What are the advantages and disadvantages for the child of having a large number of toys?
The toys and games industry is flourishing these days as the trend of buying children many toys to play with is increasing. This essay will discuss the pros and cons of this rising trend.

In today’s competitive world, the number of families in which both parents work hard to earn a livelihood is on the rise. With this growing change, parents find it difficult to spend quality time with their young ones. In order to compensate for their absence, they resort to buying them more and more toys. The toys keep the children engaged and thus helps parents to relax after the day’s work or to do other jobs. Moreover, some of the  toys companies claim that their toys are educative and help in over all development of children. This further encourages parents to buy such kind of toys.

However, this developing trend can have detrimental effects on the children and their families. To elaborate, for instance, when children go to school, they see their friends playing with different toys and then demand the same from their parents. Not all parents can afford to buy expensive toys frequently and find it difficult to fulfill their children’s desires. This results in development of negative feelings like resentment, jealousy and anger among children. Furthermore, children don’t value the toys they have and sometimes break or lose the old ones in order to get new toys. Also, some toys are violence based, and promote bad behavior.

To sum up, although providing children with toys adds positively to their growth and development, it also has dire consequences. Hence, I believe, parents should be aware of the type of toys they buy for their children and also be reasonable in the number of toys they purchase.

As the number of private cars has increased, so too has the level of pollution in many cities. What can be done to tackle this increasingly common problem?

There has been an alarming rise in the number of cars owned by people, which is resulting in an increase in pollution in many cities. This essay will discuss potential solutions to this rising problem.

In the past, cars were very expensive and not everybody could afford to buy one. Even loans given by the banks were at high interest rates, hence only the rich and elite had cars. But with the changes in the banking system, the interest rates have fallen and loans are being granted easily, resulting in an increase in the number of cars being purchased. Moreover, the public transport is not well maintained by the government. Many a times, buses and trains are very old, the seats are torn or broken. Sometimes, they are very noisy due to lack of engine servicing. This has caused many people to use their personal cars to go to work instead.

Having said that, the increase in the number of cars being driven in cities has resulted in a significant rise in the pollution levels. This will have detrimental effects on lives and the environment in the near future. Therefore, measures need to be taken to curb the rise in pollution. Firstly, increasing the rate of interest on vehicles could be a major step in discouraging people from buying cars, as this would mean only a part of the population will be able to afford taking a loan from banks. Secondly, government should invest some of it’s revenue in the purchase of new buses and trains. It can further encourage people to use public transport by dropping the transport fares. Furthermore, increase in the price of fuels, could be a way of deterring the use of personal cars.

To sum up, although there has been an increase in the pollution levels in many cities due to the rise in the number of cars used, it can be controlled if steps are taken in the right direction. Hence, I strongly believe that if the banking system, public and the government work together, the problem of pollution can be tackled successfully.

ESSAYS: Causes and solution/ effects

In many countries, very few young people read newspapers or follow the news on TV. What do you think are the causes of this?
What solutions can you suggest?
Reading newspapers and watching news on television keep us up to date with the daily events occurring worldwide. But, there has been a decline in the younger generation watching or reading the news.

There are a number of reasons for this phenomenon. Firstly, these days there are only negative news. For example, mass killings due to terrorist attack, natural disasters causing deaths and so on. This develops negativity among people and hence they prefer not to read about them. Secondly, there has been a significant rise in the number of advertisements appearing on the television in between the news. Adverts are an important means of revenue to news channels. But, they reduce the interest of people watching  news as they have to spend more time to watch only a part of the news.  In addition, the newspapers are also filled with pages full of adverts that make purchasing it unworthy. Furthermore, same news is forecasted several times a day or sometimes over a few days, which makes it monotonous and people lose interest in watching it.

Nevertheless, knowing about incidents happening around us is imperative in today’s world. News is the only source of information about new inventions, research and development happening around the world. The news  editors should ensure equal importance is given to these kind of news rather than focusing on news that are only negative. Moreover, there should a check on the number of adverts shown in between the news. The newspapers should dedicate only a page or two for advertisements while the rest should be more informative.

To sum up, the younger generation should be encouraged to watch and read news as this will add to their general knowledge as well as keep them up to date. I believe if people responsible for delivering news implement ways that will make it worth watching rather than monotonous, the younger generation will certainly take interest in it.
